ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Businessman Jim Ellison announced this week that he is running for governor of New Mexico, the fourth Republican to enter the race ahead of the 2026 election.
Ellison previously served on the state’s Public Regulation Commission for two years, from 2023 to 2024. The commission oversees utilities, insurance and other regulated industries in New Mexico.
In his announcement, Ellison said his campaign will focus on public safety, economic growth and improving the state’s business climate. He cited concerns about crime, health care access and the loss of professionals from the state as reasons for his decision to run.
“New Mexico deserves leadership that puts families, jobs and opportunity first,” Ellison said.
Ellison said he plans to travel throughout New Mexico in the coming months to meet with voters and outline his policy priorities.
The governor’s race is expected to attract multiple candidates as New Mexico faces ongoing challenges related to crime, education outcomes, health care access and workforce shortages. Primary elections are scheduled for June 2026, with the general election set for November.
