ALBUQUERQUE — The National Republican Congressional Committee released a campaign video Monday featuring New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District Republican candidate Greg Cunningham, part of the committee’s “MAGA Majority” series backing GOP challengers in competitive House districts nationwide.
The video profiles Cunningham’s background as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and, according to the NRCC, a 20-year Albuquerque Police Department officer, casting his campaign as an extension of that record of service.
“Marine veteran and former Albuquerque police officer Greg Cunningham has spent his life serving New Mexicans and will continue to do so in Congress,” NRCC Spokesman Reilly Richardson said in a statement accompanying the release. Richardson also criticized incumbent Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez, saying voters “have seen what defund the police Gabe Vasquez stands for: raising taxes, opening the border, and abolishing law enforcement.”
In the video, Cunningham points to his law enforcement career as the basis for his position on border security, saying he was “working along the border long before this was something that was in America’s consciousness.” He described the situation in stark terms, saying the country is “at war with the cartels” and accusing them of “actively trying to poison our children in the name of profit.”
The video follows a second-quarter fundraising period in which Cunningham’s campaign reported raising $901,785.25 — a total it said was the largest Q2 haul by a Republican congressional candidate in New Mexico history. A Federal Election Commission filing later confirmed Vasquez’s committee raised $627,092.93 over the comparable May 14–June 30 reporting window, trailing Cunningham’s campaign-reported figure. The NRCC’s continued investment in the race underscores the district’s status as one of just 13 nationwide carried by President Trump in 2024 but represented by a Democrat.
Cunningham, a native New Mexican, is seeking to unseat Vasquez, who has represented the 2nd District since 2023. The race is expected to be among the most closely watched House contests in the country this fall.
