This year’s legislative session made one thing clear: Republicans came to Santa Fe focused on making our communities safer, improving access to healthcare, and being responsible with your tax dollars. While only a few of our common sense proposals passed, many others were blocked by progressive Democrats who are clearly more interested in promoting political agendas than practical solutions for families across New Mexico.
Despite those obstacles, Republicans delivered meaningful wins.
After years of arguing for reform and convening a stakeholder taskforce on this topic last fall, Republicans successfully pushed for the passage of critical medical malpractice reform to help prevent lawsuit abuse from driving doctors out of our state. We championed the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact which opens the door for more physicians to practice medicine in New Mexico; this is especially important for our underserved communities.
On the topic of crime, we passed stronger penalties for criminals who assault law enforcement officers and advanced policies giving authorities more tools to intervene when dangerous individuals pose a threat to themselves or others. But many more Republican proposals to address our ongoing public safety crisis were denied consideration. Instead of divisive political theatrics, these are real solutions aimed at improving safety.
Sometimes common sense also requires us to play strong defense. We also successfully stopped some of the most damaging proposals of the session. We defeated the clearly catastrophic “Clear Horizons” Act, which would have imposed extreme mandates threatening jobs, energy production, and utility costs. We fought back against unconstitutional gun control efforts that targeted law-abiding citizens instead of criminals. And we blocked misguided policies that would have undermined law enforcement and made our communities less safe.
Even when the numbers were against us, we forced debates on legislation that deserved scrutiny. We exposed sanctuary policies that restrict cooperation with federal law enforcement, opposed unsustainable “universal” childcare spending schemes that encourage fraud, waste, and abuse, and we stood united against a bloated $11.1 billion state budget. Under Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, state spending has grown exponentially while public safety, education outcomes, and infrastructure have all significantly deteriorated. Taxpayers deserve accountability, not another year of bigger government and fewer results.
Unfortunately, too many priorities of progressive Democrat lawmakers focused solely on political theater: attacking Second Amendment rights, advancing activist environmental mandates, and promoting divisive election rhetoric. These misguided antics fail to address the serious challenges New Mexicans face every day. Crime, education performance, child welfare failures, and government waste remain pressing issues that demand immediate action.
New Mexico, it’s simple: Republicans are fighting for safer communities, better healthcare access, and fiscal responsibility. We are building bipartisan coalitions when possible and are standing firm when necessary. Our commitment remains the same moving forward: protect freedom, support law enforcement, grow our economy, and deliver results for New Mexico families.
Let’s return common sense to the Roundhouse; New Mexicans are tired of the left’s political games.
