MESILLA, N.M. — The pressing need for strong border enforcement and community safety was front and center on Monday as the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) hosted a policy forum in Mesilla, bringing crucial conversations about our national sovereignty directly to southern New Mexico. Headlining the event was U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar, who delivered remarks focused on the administration’s efforts to enhance border security, empower regional law enforcement, and restore order. The event, part of the AFPI’s Great American Comeback Tour, offered a platform for policy leaders and community members to address the stark realities at the southern border without the usual political filter.

Former U.S. Rep. Mike Garcia (California), who moderated the forum, emphasized the foundational necessity of strong law enforcement policies to protect local communities and the nation as a whole.

“America’s Comeback begins with restoring safety, security and the rule of law,” Garcia said. “We are proud to welcome Deputy Edgar to New Mexico to discuss the America First policies that are strengthening our southern border, defeating the drug cartels, combating human trafficking and protecting communities.”

Garcia further noted that the tour is designed to allow “New Mexicans to hear directly about the policies that are securing our homeland and ensuring a safer and stronger future for Americans.”

The forum also highlighted the critical perspective of local law enforcement with featured speaker and candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, Greg Cunningham, a Marine combat veteran and former detective for the Albuquerque Police Department. Cunningham’s insights underscored how border policies directly impact crime and public safety throughout the entire state of New Mexico, reaching far beyond just the border counties.

The focus on practical, frontline realities resonated with attendees who are frustrated by the disconnected rhetoric often pushed by mainstream narratives. Abenicio Baldonado, host of the New Mexico-based podcast The Chile Wire, attended the forum and noted the importance of the grounded perspectives shared by the speakers.

“I found today’s discussion incredibly compelling,” Baldonado said. “It is absolutely imperative that we hear directly from those operating on the front lines, cutting through the hearsay and unfounded claims that so often distort the realities of our southern border. Moreover, I deeply appreciate federal leaders making it a priority to travel to New Mexico to engage face-to-face with our local law enforcement and everyday citizens.”
